The materials we have chosen are high-class quality and the material development process uses sparingly renewable natural resources. Long-lasting products have a huge impact on building more sustainable future.

Strive to do better

We are the industry pioneers in the use of bio-based material technologies. Our work has required a lot of time and investments to find suitable bio-based material that applies to our current manufacturing process and meets the quality requirements of our products.

We know we are just in the beginning of our journey towards carbon neutral direction. With continuous steps we aim to develop our own actions towards more sustainable future and communicate openly about our steps towards carbon neutrality.

Shared experiences

We want to create memorable moments with You by sharing ideas and inspiration for ordinary weekdays and all kinds of festivities. We believe in helping and delighting others, and many Weiste generations have dedicated their life’s work to bring Christmas joy to people.

We wish you a Merry ECO Christmas!

Our eco material

A short video of our eco-collection on the production of bio baubles in Finland. Bio baubles are blow molded in our factories and the decoration is done by hand. Our bio baubles are made to last from generation to generation and have a classic Weiste design.

The high-level features of bio-based plastics make the material durable and long-lasting. Bio-based plastics production process uses sparingly renewable natural resources unlike the production process of traditional oil-based plastics that generates hazardous waste for the environment.

Bio-based plastics are plastic materials generated from different bio mass sources like vegetable fat and oil, corn starch, straw, woodchips, sawdust, recycled food waste and so on. The bio-based plastic used in Weiste products is responsibly produced wood.

The challenge in Weiste bio-based product development was to serve very different products, ranging from glass like transparency to more ornamental decorations. Also the material needed to be suitable for the existing production capabilities, manufacturing and testing requirements for long lasting product quality.

The challenge worldwide is that there is much need and interest towards biomaterials, but certain biomaterials are unavailable due to the increase of demand. We wanted to take our own actions towards more ecological direction and be the industry leaders in Christmas decorations made from ecological materials.

We have created Natural Materials label for our Eco collection to communicate more sustainable option for consumers. We try to decrease the environmental impact of our actions by creating long-lasting products from high quality materials. All products under Natural Materials label are produced by using sparingly renewable natural resources.

Materials are carefully chosen to meet our ecological, quality and manufacturing criteria. We are proud of our product development, that we have found an ecological option also for surface decorations. The strategy of our Eco collection was to design holistic ecological products. The label for us represents the beginning of our sustainable journey and with continuous steps we aim to develop our own actions towards more sustainable future.

FAQ

What does bio-based material mean?

Bio-based plastics are plastic materials produced from renewable biomass sources, such as vegetable fats and oils, corn starch, straw, woodchips, sawdust, recycled food waste, etc. Weiste bio-based product materials are made of from responsibly managed wood.

Is the bio-based material recyclable?

Only 1% of yearly produced 335 million tons of plastic is bio-based plastic, when 85% of plastics could be replaced with bio-based plastics.

The volumes of bio-based plastics are rather small. With these volumes proper recycling methods for bio-based plastics couldn’t have been developed. We hope that in the future the distribution of bio-based plastics keeps growing and the recycling system will be available for everyone. Bio-based plastic have fully recyclable qualities and they can be re-used as new products after melting.

Does bio-based mean biodegradable?

Bio-based plastics come from renewable biomass, meaning plants. Not all bio-based plastics are biodegradable, although some are biodegradable as well. Bio-based only refers to what was used to make the material. It doesn't imply anything about what happens to it at the end of its life. Weiste eco-products are not meant to be composted. The product quality is long lasting and meant to last for generations.

Where the Weiste eco-collection is produced?

Our Eco-collection is mainly produced in Finland at our own factories. The eco-collection is classic Weiste Finnish design.
